Chapter 14
Alyssa woke to warm sunlight and Jax’s warm body embracing her. She blinked sleep from her eyes and looked up. She was curled into him, facing his bare, muscular chest. He was cradling her against him, running his fingers over her skin. He appeared wide awake, but in no hurry to leave the bed. He only met her gaze, gave her a lazy grin and continued to stroke her shoulder. Alyssa let out a blissful sigh and closed her eyes again, enjoying being enveloped by warmth and caresses. She snuggled closer to him, which caused him to make a satisfied rumbling sound.
Alyssa couldn’t remember a better morning. Her body still ached from the night’s adventures, but it was a warm and pleasant ache that made her feel alive. In her thirty-five years of life, she’d never woken up so happy and comfortable. A shadow immediately crept into her paradise.
Jax is leaving. In two days he’ll be gone.
It was unfair. Just when she had gotten so close to him. She already knew what emptiness he would leave behind; an emptiness no other pet or lover could fill. Alyssa pushed the thought away with determination.
Don’t think about it. The last thing he wants is you turning whiny on him. It won’t make him change his mind; it’ll only irritate him. You have two days. Make the best of them.
She rested her hand on his arm, tracing the contours of his scales with her fingertips. She enjoyed the feel of them; warm, hard and smooth. The color was a beautiful mixture of iridescent blue and brown.
“No one has ever done that before,” Jax said.
Alyssa looked up at him.
“I’m attracted to human females,” he explained. “I sought their company whenever I felt lonely. I managed to bribe some to sleep with me, but even then, they didn’t want to touch my alien parts. They said I looked and felt like a snake. You’re the first woman I know who wants to touch me like that. You’re the first one I know who’s turned on by my appearance.”
Heartened, Alyssa gave him a soft, affectionate smile. Any woman on Silenia would have found Jax attractive, but she didn’t feel like pointing it out to him. All the better for her. And he didn’t look anything like a snake. He looked like a human with enticing, alien details. She still couldn’t believe humans on Earth and other colonies could be so backward that they ostracized someone like him. He was full of good qualities.
“I love touching you,” she simply said. “And I love you touching me.”
“I had a hard time believing it at first. I didn’t know what to make of this whole Silenian madhouse. But it looks like I got lucky with you.” He tickled her behind her ear.
Alyssa wanted to beg him to stay with her, but bit her tongue instead.
If he is to stay, it has to be his idea, not mine. Just smile and cooperate. Show him a good time. If you make him happy, he might decide to stay, after all.
